About Stone

Granite Marble Sandstone

Stone Selection

We believe that half of the effort of satisfying a client’s vision goes into selecting the appropriate stone. The earth offers an enormous variety of stone. We buy from a number of importers and domestic producers to give you the largest selection possible. You can choose your slabs directly at the stone yard or, in consultation with Bedrock, shop via the web. If you are looking for a stone of limited quantity, it is essential that you allow sufficient lead time for obtaining your stone.

Stone Types

The properties and usefulness of any stone is determined by the way it is formed in the earth. There are three major types of stone:

Igneous granite quartz basalt

Metamorphic marble quartzite slate schist soapstone

Sedimentary limestone travertine onyx sandstone

It is beyond the scope of this site to go into the complexity of each type of stone. Jay has an expert knowledge of all varieties of stone and their characteristics, amassed over 25 years of working and observing his material: how each stone performs in different applications and over time. A client’s specific needs can only be met by a thorough understanding of their expectations and the requirements of their project, and Jay is committed to giving his clients the benefit of his experience. Polished granite is not the only stone suitable for kitchen counters. Let us help you to discover the stone that is right for you.

But is it green?

Stone is the oldest natural material and the earth supplies it in abundance. The way we work stone has hardly changed since the Egyptians. Bedrock does not usually advocate adding chemical sealers to the surface of your stone, so it is a wise and healthful choice for your home. In terms of carbon footprint, the fabrication process is minimal, but transportation can be a major load. Stone is heavy, and it takes a lot of energy to move it around. Bedrock can access stone from nearly every continent, but if you prefer to use a local stone, or are building a LEED-certified house, we can provide you with a sample of stone from quarries located within close proximity to your site.
